KENNEBUNK, MAINE – Crystal and Troy Holland of Alfred just received some great news about a new home for their family of six. The news is this year’s York County Habitat for Humanity’s “Builder’s Blitz” will both involve and benefit the Holland family in constructing their new home. The construction is set to begin on Saturday, May 31 in Alfred.
Habitat for Humanity of York County typically constructs one house each year. It enlists the active involvement of the family through “sweat equity” as well as corporate sponsors to help pay for the materials. This year’s blitz will be managed by Douston Construction and Patco Construction, along with 30 – 35 volunteers and numerous in-kind and cash contributions, including a cash contribution of $500 from Kennebunk Savings Bank.
The actual building will be done by a combination of volunteer labor and professional volunteers. Families like the Hollands are chosen for this Habitat program based on a number of criteria, including an evaluation that the family’s current shelter is substandard, unaffordable or overcrowded and that the family is willing to perform 400 hours of “sweat equity” work, among other requirements. According to Shawn Douston, President of Douston Construction, planning for this Alfred project has progressed well, “I am amazed at how involved and generous everyone has been.” Bill Darling, Kennebunk Savings’ VP and Residential Underwriting Manager agreed, saying, “It’s gratifying to see so many members of the building community come together to help out a local family.”
Most Habitat for Humanity chapters are run by local, independent boards, which initiate and manage all construction, mortgages, and homeowner selection. For more information, including ways in which you can help, please contact: www.habitatyorkcounty.org
